Volatility Clustering in Financial Markets: Empirical Facts and Agent–Based Models
نویسنده
چکیده
Time series of financial asset returns often exhibit the volatility clustering property: large changes in prices tend to cluster together, resulting in persistence of the amplitudes of price changes. After recalling various methods for quantifying and modeling this phenomenon, we discuss several economic mechanisms which have been proposed to explain the origin of this volatility clustering in terms of behavior of market participants and the news arrival process. A common feature of these models seems to be a switching between low and high activity regimes with heavytailed durations of regimes. Finally, we discuss a simple agent-based model which links such variations in market activity to threshold behavior of market participants and suggests a link between volatility clustering and investor inertia.

Reproduce stylized facts of artificial financial market and comparison with real data
Agent-based computational models represent a big challenge in many disciplines. A vital approach receiving much interest is agent-based models, which gives a new area providing some ways to tackle some of the restrictions of the analytical models in finance. The aim of our research is to contribute to the behavioral finance and agent-based artificial markets by studying their market-wise implic...

Many agent-based models of financial markets have been able to reproduce certain stylized facts that are observed in actual empirical time series data by using “zero-intelligence” agents whose behaviour is largely random in order to ascertain whether certain phenomena arise from market microstructure as opposed to strategic behaviour. Although these models have been highly successful, it is not...

This article aims at reviewing recent empirical and theoretical developments usually grouped under the term Econophysics. Since its name was coined in 1995 by merging the words “Economics” and “Physics”, this new interdisciplinary field has grown in various directions: theoretical macroeconomics (wealth distributions), microstructure of financial markets (order book modeling), econometrics of f...
متن کاملAgent-based Financial Markets: Matching Stylized Facts With Style
Empirical facts from financial data pose some of the most difficult puzzles for equilibrium macroeconomic modeling. Features such as volatility, excess kurtosis, and conditional heteroscedasticity are not easily replicated by any single representative agent model. Most agent-based financial markets are able to match a good subset of these features quite easily. This paper will summarize some of...
